Judge considers request to dismiss mystery deaths case

May 21, 2018

CONCORD, N.H. — Both sides in the case of a Vermont man accused by his family of killing his millionaire grandfather and possibly his mother are sparring over whether the case could continue in New Hampshire. Nathan Carman, who represented himself Monday, also said he needed more time to raise money for an attorney. Carman has been called a suspect in the 2013 shooting death of real estate developer John Chakalos in Connecticut. No one's been arrested. He's been questioned about the day his boat sank with his mother, Linda Carman, aboard near Rhode Island in 2016. She's presumed dead....

Why US-China trade talks left toughest issues unresolved

May 21, 2018

WASHINGTON — Facing the risk of a mutually harmful trade war, the world's two biggest economies have put their differences on hold. Yet it's far from clear that a fragile truce between the United States and China can hold. In exchange for the United States agreeing to hold off on tariffs on up to $150 billion in Chinese goods, Beijing agreed over the weekend to "substantially reduce" America's huge trade deficit with China. Beijing made no specific commitment, though. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's declaration that the American tariffs would be suspended cheered global markets Monday on relief that the two...

2 Brazilians arrested in attempt to smuggle African migrants

May 21, 2018

SAO PAULO — Authorities say they've arrested two Brazilians suspected of trying to smuggle African migrants on a roughly 1,900-mile (3,000-kilometer) voyage across the Atlantic by boat. Federal Police officer Roberio Chaves said Monday that the Brazilians and 25 Africans set off from Cape Verde in a catamaran last month but ran into trouble and were adrift for weeks. They were rescued by fishermen and arrived in Brazil on Saturday. Tens of thousands of Africans try to reach Europe by sea each year, but such voyages to Brazil are rate. Chaves said it's the first group of migrants to arrive...

School shooting victims remembered as artistic, history buff

May 21, 2018

SANTA FE, Texas — A history buff who wanted to join the Army and an artistic student who liked red hair dye were among the 10 people killed at a Texas high school. Family members and friends of the eight students and two teachers fatally shot Friday fondly remembered their loved ones. They used such words as sweet, hardworking and loving. Eight of the 10 were students: Kimberly Vaughan, Shana Fisher, Angelique Ramirez, Christian Riley Garcia, Jared Black, Sabika Sheikh, Christopher Jake Stone and Aaron Kyle McLeod. The other two, Glenda Perkins and Cynthia Tisdale, were substitute teachers. At least...

School shooting may not bring change to gun-loving Texas

May 21, 2018

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas has more than 1.2 million licensed handgun owners who can openly carry their weapons in public. The state hosted the National Rifle Association's annual meeting two weeks ago. And until Monday, the governor's re-election website was raffling off a shotgun. Guns are so hard-wired into Texas culture that last week's deadly rampage at Santa Fe High School is considered unlikely to result in any significant restrictions on access to weapons in the Lone Star State. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott reacted to the killings of eight students and two teachers by calling for a series of roundtable...
